Ask HN: Upvotes have seemingly new, limited effect or delay
I realized today that my upvotes on comments have either delayed or no effect, while my upvotes on submissions seem immediate, but with the odd inability to unvote without a long delay or no effect. To test this, I did the following:
1. COMMENTS:
Upvoted several recent comments of different users through different threads. Refreshed their user profile in separate tab (multiple times) and observed no increase/decrease in karma. Same results when going back and forth refreshing same tab. Removing cache nor using a separate browser (not logged in) had any effect.
2.
SUBMISSIONS:
Using the same method as above, I upvoted several submissions in new (but older) status. Strangely, the submission would rise by one point, but after unvoting, would remain unaffected, but possibly retract with a significant delay.
I can certainly imagine a purpose or reason for delays, but I'd never noticed previously. My effect (or ineffect) on comments does seem new.
Is this behavior induced moderation voodoo, or standard?
- mmastrac 5y agoAre you submitting upvotes too quickly? The backend will sometimes ignore requests sent too quickly. Check your network tab to see what the server response is.
- eth0up 5y agoNo more quickly than I often do. Because the upvote result for submissions is nearly instant but delayed for all else, I doubt a network issue. However, where is this Network Tab you mention? Note: I upvoted your comment (because it's an effort to help), but your karma did not budge. Edit: quite a few minutes later and my upvote remains ineffective. Edit: checked again and nothing's changed. I can no longer upvote comments.
- mmastrac 5y agoRight-click page, inspect, find the network tab in the developer tools. It might give you a hint as to what's happening. When I upvote you, I see a network request that ends in "ok"
- eth0up 5y agoI haven't figured out how to right-click in Goilem (android), which I use more often than I should. Sorry for the misunderstanding. What indicates that it's not a network issue is (among several things) that the upvote registers, at least, with a missing arrow -- but not an additional number/point to karma. Thanks for the suggestions.
