I block all of chat / hangouts / whatever via ublock origin. I use gmail for email only, I consider the chat client to be bloat.

  Chat/Meet in gmail can also be turned off in gmail settings.

  Does that actually stop Gmail from making the requests or is it just cosmetic only?
