US health care, rated by longevity, is about the same as Cuba. There is a caveat, the poor die young and those with health plans live close to the Japanese who are close or at the top.
Yes, the USA pays almost twice as much as the developed average = poor get little, rich get $$ wasted in getting older, many in poor health or poor mental states. Sure, over 65 it is all supposedly free - but by then the dividends of medical care skipped for $$ reasons have done the damage.
The Insurance companies, the Hospital companies, the drug companies and the doctor racket have this town sewed up. Did you know the AMA limits the number of new doctors who can graduate annually by enrollment limits? You would think people would flock to the universities, but they have the American Medical Association instructing them how many new MD admissions are allowed. So little price competition exists - which enlarged MD enrollment would certainly promote.
All politics and de-facto bribery via campaign funds and PACs keep this going. Non whites pay for this white elite by their too early deaths.
I can think of no rational reason why this persists, but a host of venal and self serving reasons come to mind.
