I believe that people overestimate the percentage of the population for many small minority groups. I do not, however, believe that the mean estimate for transgender population is 21%. I don't believe they think 30% live in NYC, 30% in Texas, and 32% in California, leaving 8% of the population living anywhere else. The lowest estimate is 20%, and the highest estimate is 65% (even though several categories actually included well over 80%). It looks rather like a bunch of people said 50% to everything, skewing the means towards the middle.
