IMO, don't "try" to make friends. You'll come off as fake and people will notice. Instead, be yourself, and if you have to try for something, try not to upset other people. Ask for asking Mike for help, just do it. He knows you're new and the company has told him to help you get going. You'll stop being the clueless new person after you've learned about the company's stuff.
