Everyone Surprised by the Senate Passing Permanent DST. Especially the Senators
- nonrandomstring 5y agoWho is going to vote against the "Sunshine Protection Act" for goodness sake!? That's up there with "The Patriot Act" for hokey cheesyness. Anyone want to sign my "Anti kitten shredding" motion?
- vangelis 5y agoHow many honest, hard working kitten shredders would it put out of business!?
- lsllc 5y agoWell, the extra hour of sunshine might cause the curtains to fade and the cows might not know when to get milked -- at least according to former Queensland Premier Joh Bjelke-Petersen in 1992: https://www.spectator.com.au/2017/01/sunshine-state/ https://www.spectator.com.au/2017/01/sunshine-state/

- ncmncm 5y agoWon't anyone think of the tiny little mice from Kansas being told they can be movie stars?
- t-writescode 5y ago> This is not how the Senate usually works. You know, I don't actually believe this. Even if they claim they take a long time deliberating, a lot of the bills they process are obscenely long and there's no way they've ever read and ingested Tolkein-Epic sized documents full of legal diffs.
- jfengel 5y agoThey have staffs whose job it is to read the bills. They work late hours, especially when one of those massive omnibus bills is on the table. Their staffs still don't have the time to do this for every bill, so they'll often delegate the work to the committees. If their partisans on the committee recommend the bill, they'll probably think it's OK. If there is something of significance to them in particular, they'll get a heads up. Cases like this are, as TFA notes, extremely unusual. Somebody screwed up. Almost certainly somebody in the minority whip's office, but a lot of other people who were supposed to serve as circuit breakers also failed. It's not entirely unlike code review on a big team. They split up the work into areas of expertise. You'll put in varying levels of effort depending on how much it's likely to matter. Here, it sounds like a lot of others were expecting somebody else to put more effort into the review, and it'll take a few days to figure out just who screwed up worst/first.
- willcipriano 5y ago"We have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it."
- nine_zeros 5y agoWe think of American laws and systems to be fair - because we're told that from childhood. American laws are anything but easy and fair. It is only obvious once you have to deal with it personally.
