I guess using and older version of explorer, or a free one from ReactOS could be a way around it. Another option is to use the server editions of Windows which come with a lot less of this kind of crap. There's also Ameliorated Windows, tho questionable in legality and comes with poor documentation and some quirks due to the amount of features cut out.
