Stronger hands lengthen your life
- telchior 5y agoNot worth the read; no data or proof involved. Just the vague assertion that, since deaths from falling (like octogenarians have, not the fun rock climbing kind) are increasing, you should have a strong grip to catch yourself.
- bhelkey 5y agoLinked by the article: > Earlier studies have linked grip strength with future disability, heart disease, and death. One study even found that grip strength was a better predictor of death or cardiovascular disease than blood pressure. [1] [1] https://www.health.harvard.edu/heart-health/stronger-hands-linked-to-a-healthier-heart#:~:text=Earlier%20studies%20have%20linked%20grip,cardiovascular%20disease%20than%20blood%20pressure https://www.health.harvard.edu/heart-health/stronger-hands-l....
- telchior 5y agoIt's just a correlation, no? Probably grip strength is just a decent indicator for overall health. Whereas the implication of the article is that sitting around squeezing grip strength trainers will somehow reduce your chance of disability / heart disease / death. Article also didn't link an actual study (always a bad sign), just some stub article. I did find this, apparently by the same authors, on a quick search; grip strength is lower in diabetics: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26232901/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26232901/
- Scaevolus 5y agoThis sounds similar to "walking speed predicts mortality rate" https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/walking-speed-survival/ https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/walking-speed-sur... Systemic weakness leading to death is a common pattern.
- TechBro8615 5y ago> one of the web services used to contact us securely was hosted on servers located inside Belarus Ok, so you have a secure web service... > during one of their tasks, package containing node-ipc module was updated on a production server, which resulted in executing your code and wiping over 30,000 messages and files But you push code directly to "production" of this "secure web service," without manually approving dependency updates? No build, no test, no check GitHub for angry comments about the update? That said, the GitHub issue is making quite an extraordinary claim given the number of coincidences required for it to be true. It sounds like exactly the kind of edgy troll post someone morally offended by the situation might take the time to write.
- saurik 5y agoI feel like you must have commented on the wrong article (which was super disappointing as I got all excited that the article was going to be about the need for "strong hands" to avoid updating software or something).
- TechBro8615 5y agoLOL, I definitely did. Whoops. That explains why I was logged out in the tab where I submitted this! But I can’t delete it or edit it now since I missed the two hour window.
