Don't Assume Consensus in the Absence of Objection
- absolute100 5y agoAn important reminder from Candost Dagdeviren: "Assuming consensus in the absence of objection leaves out the good, bad, and diverse ideas—all of them. Many companies work hard to create a diverse culture yet fail to take advantage." -- consider asking during and after meetings how people feel about the decision made or the process that got us there.
- Spivak 5y agoMy favorite tactic that I currently deal with at $DAYJOB is an offshoot of this — consensus by intimidation. Get everyone in a zoom call with every manager and C suite, do something glaringly unpopular that only affects rank-and-file employees, and then ask if anyone has any questions, comments or concerns to a room of crickets. And then for the vinegar strokes close the meeting by taking about how much you value transparency and openness. Every single time he’s like suprised pikachu when everyone complains to their teams and it becomes office drama or to their direct manager instead.
