I have an unknown file with data
how would I find out what kind of data is it on linux? it's probably not encrypted, I just don't know what type of file it is
- nonrandomstring 5y agofile strings hexdump (look for headers like ELF RIFF etc) identify (spots image files) sox (see if its audio) gnuplot - try plotting it as floats or ints (sometime you can see some order and make a guess) scanelf, dumpelf etc
- bklaasen 5y agoRun the `file` command on it. It uses magic numbers to determine the file type.
