The only thing that everyone agreed on here is how equally uninformed they themselves are. Which is a breath of fresh air compared to certain places where everyone believes they are the best informed and most well thought out.

The blogosphere economics circle jerk is about as good as HN on economics, I wouldn't cite them as reliable or dependable source of info.

One of the most annoying thing about engineering (and smart people in general) is how they think because they are good in X field, that somehow translates into Y field with little training.

  They're also used to dealing with things that are entirely within their control and all variables are known. That's so far off the mark for macroeconomics it's not even funny.

  Macroeconomics is largely narrative driven with very limited evidence behind it. I would argue a theoretical physicist could produce more macro-economically sound models than a tenured professor of macro-economics. The former at least would have a deeper understanding/appreciation of the math.

  I think the problem is people who don't know who post anyway on HN. We'd all prefer the xperts get the most voice, and others mainly sticking to questions. May I suggest the following addition to HN: Each post-requires a self rating 1-5 Likert on their expertise/experience in the topic, then allow a sorting feature of greatest to least expertise.

    Such a measure wouldn't generate accurate self-evaluations, it would just add noise. Commenting about things they don't know about is...what human beings do.
