I wonder about the "order of operations" when calculating the doppler shift though. We're seeing the back of the acretion disk over the top of the event horizon due to the light bending. However there is significant doppler shifting in the color of the acretion disk in that region. Aren't we essentially looking straight down onto the back of the acretion disk, orthogonally to the disk's plane of rotation? And as such, shouldn't we see less doppler shift in that region?
My intuition may very well be wrong, but I do like thinking about how light behaves around these things.
