Cultural boycotts don’t work in democracies (look at how it’s been attempted with Israel) and they definitely don’t work in autocracies. The average researcher, tennis player, artist, musician, etc. has no influence among the oligarchy. I’d say a boycott would only play right into the hands of a dictator hellbent on proving the world’s rigged against Russia.

Nevertheless, there is much more to unpack in this reprehensible and dishonorable call by the Ukrainians scientists based on indiscriminate hate of another nationality (this is against all values, morals and laws of the western world). It is appalling that some western scientists and institutions are eager to throw the basis on which we stand as scientific community to thrash. (Im not going to even address the blatant double standards, which are equally troubling). We can read in the letter ..."“Russian scientists have no moral right to retransmit any messages to the world scientific community,” says Olesia Vashchuk, the head of Ukraine’s Young Scientists Council at the Ministry of Education and Science, in two letters dated 1 March" By what logic, what moral is this even published and taken seriously? It is ideologically confused and hurts its own cause, as Olivia Buttler in her poem concludes:... when emotions rule, destruction, destruction, destruction... I am against and denounced in the most strong terms any and all racist ideologies/policies (as such this call in fact represents) no matter their political or economic justification imagined and in any case short-lived.
