To be fair, that was on the side of the article for me, so probably just not very flexible CSS. However, I never understand popups/modal windows on top of articles I'm actively trying to read, spawning after I scroll down the page. If anything, it will rather irritate me for the interruption rather than succeed in upselling me to subscribing to a newsletter from a website I've only just visited for the first time.
