- dmitrygr 5y ago> If the author is here: ask some people in Russia/Ukraine/Argentina/Venezuela if they think the financial crisis will ever arrive. I have family & friends in Russia. Stores still have bread and milk. Prices are in Rubles and so are incomes. It is harder to get dollars, and iPhones cost more, but normal everyday things are more or less normal. Russia has had plenty of time to prepare. In 2014 the west showed that we were and were not willing to do (in response to Crimea). They have domestic computers (MCST) - not wonderful but they work, domestic aircraft (military and civilian), domestic silicon fabs (65nm but that is plenty fast if you avoid electron apps), domestic automobiles. Every person I ask replies with "What crisis? Is that what they tell you in USA? Haha, even gasoline prices haven't risen here. How are they there?"

- aikinai 5y agoJust wanted to say I love how you were able to squeeze in a dig at Electron in a geopolitical/economic discussion.
- throwaway_4ever 5y agoWhile milk, bread, and Russian vehicles might be fine for being in the 1950’s (even Putin drives around in Mercedes lol), for a 21st century standard of living, many conveniences will be unreachable. Think medical equipment, home appliances, rural labor support (tractors, chainsaws, etc.) recreation (skis, racquets, etc). The rest will still be greatly impacted by factories not having access to western supply chain parts.
- dmitrygr 5y agoMedical equipment and home appliances are made in Russia aplenty, actually. Tractors too. Yes, some more modern luxuries will not be available, but daily life of the middle class will not be affected. Keep in mind that the Russian middle class does not have iphones, nor drives in BMWs.
- throwaway_4ever 5y agoYou mean like this tractor? https://mobile.twitter.com/kamilkazani/status/1501369950463836164 https://mobile.twitter.com/kamilkazani/status/15013699504638... > daily life of the middle class will not be affected …ugh this is actually a wild theory. Every thing that relies on an import is now 30% more expensive.
- dmitrygr 5y agoNo, more like this and more modern variants: https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A2-40_(%D1%82%D1%80%D0%B0%D0%BA%D1%82%D0%BE%D1%80) https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A2-40_(%D1%82%D1%80%D0%B0%...
- NicoJuicy 5y agoIs that a good example? That's almost 3 decades ago > T-40 ( colloquial - sorokovka , sorokan) is a brand of wheeled tractor produced by the Lipetsk Tractor Plant from 1961 to 1995 [1] . > LTZ-60 is a wheeled tractor of traction class 1.4 manufactured by the Lipetsk Tractor Plant , designed to replace the obsolete T-40 . Produced since 1991. Due to bankruptcy, the tractor was discontinued. The factory is bankrupt.
- freemint 5y ago65nm is not plenty fast. Since Russia's 65nm capabilities are disputed [1] to be viable for mass production. That only leaves them with reliable 90nm fabs. This is 4GHz Pentium 4 at best. I have not seen any indication of video acceleration, so if a western CPU breaks and is replaced by a Russia made one it might no longer be able to play 4k video fluently. All the fabless semi conductor companies (Baikal, Elberus) only have recent designs for foreign nodes. Are you aware of any MCST chip that shipped in larger number on 65nm produced in Russia if this node is supposedly available since the early 2010s in Russia? I am asking like that because all Elberus chips smaller than 90nm seem to be fabbed by TSMC in recent years. [2] The Elberus chip supposedly on 65nm clocks at 0.8 GHz. Also I agree that the sanctions were well targeted not to hit Russia's poor but focus on the middle class upward instead. - aaaaaaaaata 5y agoThe Internet interprets censorship as damage, and routes around it. It always has, we always will. Why are you doubting the community now, of all times?
- devwastaken 5y agoThe internet is not some holy God beyond the powers of humanity. It's hardware and cables. Any country can be cut from access, any server, any user. This isn't a "community". It's business.
