Note that this is from 2018. I haven't noticed too much AMP traffic/links lately. Maybe this threat was averted?

  AMP no longer gets preferential treatment in search results as of mid-2021, which is the primary reason most publishers implemented it.     I know it's a bit anecdotal but I definitely feel there's been a drop off in the number of AMP links I've seen in the last wee while. Ultimately I won't click them anyway, just like link shorteners.

  If it is all but dead why are news publications still including AMP links. For example, following AMP links without Javascript/CSS enabled has long been an easy way avoid some of them that use "paywalls" to annoy and track non-subscribers (instead of simply denying access through use of password protection). See, e.g., WSJ.

Who needs Google amp when you can just well design your webpages, free of bloat and useless JavaScripts

  I mean it used to be that you could design the best page around and the AMP version would still get a higher search ranking so that's why. Thankfully not true anymore?

  This is something I say whenever Google AMP gets brought up. To your average non-technical user, Google AMP is a godsend. AMP pages are faster and more responsive than non-AMP pages. Even without the pre-loading, they're an order of magnitude faster because what you can do has been slimmed down to something far more sane.
