My understanding is that it's pretty much the worst way to go, and only really gets used by people trying to make a (usually political) statement. It also has form in this region - see Thích Quảng Đức. A desperate last stand to try and make a statement about censorship and repression, which ironically seems to have had all evidence censored and repressed. Truly awful.
