One part of it is the fact that when you're alone you're more likely to drift into unhealthy habits. Being isolated means that there's nobody to judge your for staying in bed, eating junk food and scrolling reddit all weekend. It's similar to how I'm more likely to keep my flat clean if I have people coming over, or more likely to get my work done if I'm in the office surrounded by people, or to set more ambitious goals in life if I'm surrounded by more successful people. Not everyone is motivated that way but I find a bit of judgement from other people to be a healthy thing, or at least it's something that pushes me in the right direction. Being too isolated for too long causes your life to rot in a way.
- agent008t 5y agoMorpheus: The need to be observed and understood was once satisfied by God. Now we can implement the same functionality with data-mining algorithms. JC Denton: Electronic surveillance hardly inspires reverence. Perhaps fear and obedience, but not reverence. Morpheus: God and the gods were apparitions of observation, judgment and punishment. Other sentiments towards them were secondary. JC Denton: No one will ever worship a software entity peering at them through a camera. Morpheus: The human organism always worships. First, it was the gods, then it was fame (the observation and judgment of others), next it will be self-aware systems you have built to realize truly omnipresent observation and judgment. JC Denton: You underestimate humankind's love of freedom. Morpheus: The individual desires judgment. Without that desire, the cohesion of groups is impossible, and so is civilization.
- technobabbler 5y agoHah, didn't realize Deus Ex had a Morpheus too. Thought I missed a Deus Ex x Matrix crossover. Was there an alternative dialog line that would let JC agree with Morpheus?
- agent008t 5y agoWouldn't be surprised - still discovering new things in that game 22 (!) years later!

- jjfoooo5 5y agoAs a newly, painfully single person, I'd say it was less my partner's judgement that prevented me from doing those unhealthy things, and more the more engaging and fulfilling slate of things to do that come with having a partner. We all have an activation energy for doing the things we know we enjoy, it's nice to have someone around to pick you up on your slow days, and pick them up on theirs. Maybe I'll get a dog, I guess.
