May I Quote?
- drewcoo 5y ago> The idea is to have, tucked in the back matter, elaborate indexes that allow users to find whatever topic they’re looking for — by flipping pages back and forth. Yes, that's a huge advantage tomes have over scrolls, for example. It was a big breakthrough! > Perhaps hyperlinked electronic versions will soon make things easier. Or this thing called "search," maybe. I don't think the author has done any study on or deep pondering abuot different media, how they came about or how they work.
- bryanrasmussen 5y agoI guess a book search that used indexes as a type of pagerank would be useful.

- minroot 5y agoWhy are you hiding parts of article text with a subscription form saying "Want LARB in your inbox?". I want to read your thing first, without being disturbed.
- avnigo 5y agoTo be fair, that was on the side of the article for me, so probably just not very flexible CSS. However, I never understand popups/modal windows on top of articles I'm actively trying to read, spawning after I scroll down the page. If anything, it will rather irritate me for the interruption rather than succeed in upselling me to subscribing to a newsletter from a website I've only just visited for the first time.
- FabHK 5y agoBTW, if you like quotes, the Quote Investigator is an entertaining read and a good reference for many (often misattributed) quotes: https://quoteinvestigator.com https://quoteinvestigator.com
- everybodyknows 5y agoTried to find Orwell's great quote "... lessons of history." Got wildly wrong answers, then selecting page "2", on iPad, redirected to install some app.
- bitxbitxbitcoin 5y agoOne of my favorite books in my collection is a decades old Thesaurus of Quotations which is organized by topic.
- conradludgate 5y agoIs the cookie consent form on this website legal? I have no way to non-consent while still reading the content, which I believe is my right
- dredmorbius 5y agoTechnical solution: uMatrix: deny all cookies from domain. The legal problem remains, and is significant.
