I use makefile for all my builds. cmake can help portability across OSes but it has a layer of its own complexity, I mostly work on linux alone, makefile seems more than enough. google etc produces new tools to build its huge code base but I don't have that large scale source code, makefile so far worked well for my scale. unless you have specific needs I feel makefile will do just fine. it's simple, readable, manageable, and get the job done fast.
