I have worked in several positions where there was no project manager. Doing so massively improved my appreciation for them. A bad one can be miserable, for sure. A good one is worth their weight in platinum, though. They drive figuring out user needs vs wants, they prioritize the ever-growing pile of work, and handle any communication that doesn't require developers so the devs can stay focused on the problem of writing the software.
