- skilled 5y agoWhat the hell... I thought it will be one or two submissions but god damn it's an absolute fiesta!!
- WalterGR 5y ago> god damn it's an absolute siesta!! Do you mean fiesta? Otherwise you may be suffering from narcolepsy. :)

- News-Dog 5y agoClick on the posts trailing url > (some-rubbish-or-malware-site.suspect) You will see all the posters-or-bots posting. I've started collecting them, I'm thinking about how to remove some of the load on the Mods.
- gus_massa 5y agoSome sites and users are banned and their post are autokilled. There is a lot of automatic moderation in HN. If you see an error, you can vouch/flag the post. And if you see a huge error, you can send an email to the mods.
- interleave 5y agoI'd love to see what you're seeing but I don't fully understand what your instruction above means ("Click on the posts trailing url > (some-rubbish-or-malware-site.suspect"). Can you please clarify? Thank you so much! I set showdead to "yes" and can see [dead] submissions under https://news.ycombinator.com/newest https://news.ycombinator.com/newest btw.
- News-Dog 5y agoSorry I was unclear, [Warning this site likely hosts Malware] as an example; [dead] [SNIP] 'Keygen Free Download 2022' >> (freshcrack.best) << = https://news.ycombinator.com/from?site=freshcrack.best https://news.ycombinator.com/from?site=freshcrack.best
- interleave 5y agoOh, that's so cool, thank you very much for clarifying. Looking at your example in light of Jacque's overall question I would say, this operator is either paid directly or indirectly to promote the site. I don't know/can't tell if that's a long play "in order to influence the discussion" or just promote installs for compromised software. Anyone know what the usual go-to reason for this kind of submission is?
- muzani 5y agoYeah, I don't think they're campaigns. Just your regular netizens with extremely strong opinions. As much as people expect sockpuppetry, many innocent new accounts are wrongly classified as well. It's one reason I keep showdead on.
- derekp7 5y agoI actually got to wondering why some dead accounts got killed, when I see acceptable to good content from them. It is only when I go back through the comment history far enough, I can sometimes see what got them pushed over the edge. But other times I don't see anything really bad, so my assumption is that some other automated heuristic kicked in (posting from low reputation IPs), or that what got them banned ended up deleted. I know you can sometimes vouch for a comment, but it would be nice to be able to click a button that gives an explanation of why an account was shadow banned (assuming that doesn't violate privacy or something).
- eimrine 5y agoI have not understood the differences between [flagged] and [dead], sorry if I don't see something obvious. But this action revealed me the secret about why HN is so nice to read. Switching the option to 'no' for not seing that hell any more.
- gus_massa 5y agoThe difference of [flagged] and [dead] is explained in the unofficial guide of undocumented features of HN, in particular look at https://github.com/minimaxir/hacker-news-undocumented#flaggingvouching https://github.com/minimaxir/hacker-news-undocumented#flaggi...
- blaser-waffle 5y agoShort version: Users with enough Karma can flag a post for breaking rules, being blatant propaganda, etc. Enough flags and it drops rapidly in the rankings or dies; depends on how many [flagged] hits it gets. Higher karma users can vouch for a flagged post, which is kinda like a reverse flag. [dead] means mods killed it.
- eimrine 5y agoToday before setting the option to "no" I have seen at least one post being both [flagged] and [dead] among just flaggeds and just deads, thats why I asked the question. I have not read the link from previous commenter yet, and your answer still does not answers how a post can have both of sins. But if the answer is there you can not to bother noticing it for me, because I will definitely read it later, because HN's rules is so insightful source of information about community building.
- detaro 5y agoPurely from observation, I don't know the actual internals: For submissions: Flagging is also a "score" internally, which also affects ranking. If it gets over a threshold, [flagged] gets shown but you can still comment and interact, if it goes over a further threshold it gets "flagkilled" and is [flagged][dead], at which point you can't comment anymore. What the threshold is depends on the other activity on the submission - if something has no/little comments or votes it'll go immediately to [flagged][dead], if there is interaction it takes more flags and the thresholds move further apart. I believe comments can end up in just [flagged] but not [dead] only if a moderator removes the [dead] flag - at least I think I've only seen it on comments a mod replied to.
