Ask HN: Why did Android succeed where as others(barring iOS) failed?
- dtx1 5y agoBeing early enough in the market to have only iOS as a competitor and having big daddy google behind it.
- _448 5y ago> Being early enough I don't think that is true. There were already others in the arena, Symbian and other Linux based mobile OSes e.g.LiMo foundation, Maemo, OpenMoko etc. After that there were Bada, Meego, Sailfish etc.
- dtx1 5y agoNone of them were considered competitors by the mainstream. In fact, the mainstream had blackberry and iOS and no one knew wtf the Sailfish was.
- gostsamo 5y ago1. It was early. 2. Google services. 3. Google support for telecom partnerships. 4. Java which at the time was rather popular cross platfrom technology. 5. Opened platform with few restrictions to publishing and easy to install apps.

Opened platform with few restrictions to publishing and easy to install apps. Java was available on other platforms too. Not true for other points.
