What a wonderful article. The argument makes total sense to me.
I've always felt that US/Anglo sources are using the word as a way to subtly convey inferiority, even when they are supposedly praising someone or something.
- rectang 5y agoSome people like seeing that subtle connotation of inferiority applied, as it reinforces their worldview. Hence the preference for "ethnic tensions" over more accurate, thought-provoking alternatives. There's a market for that, but it seems that Nieman Reports won't service it.
