Do you see System 360 and Kubernetes as parallel technologies?
- pjmlp 5y agoI see Kubernetes + type 1 hypervisors replacing UNIX, thus achieving the same kind of OS virtualization done on IBM mainframes that trace their roots back to System 360.
- wereHamster 5y agoFair enough. But one big feature of Kubernetes is that you can scale it to multiple (thousands or more) physical machines (that are physically or even geographically separated). Can you do the same with System 360?
- pjmlp 5y agoYes, https://www.ibm.com/it-infrastructure/z/capabilities/hybrid-cloud https://www.ibm.com/it-infrastructure/z/capabilities/hybrid-...
- p_l 5y agoHybrid cloud is bad comparison. The best comparison, IMHO, is that Kubernetes is continuation of ideas espoused perhaps most visibly by IBM JES3 (and before that, ASP)
- jensfr 5y agoEven before Cloud there was parallel sysplex, which could be distributed geographically afair https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_Parallel_Sysplex https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_Parallel_Sysplex
