Sibling already said this, but you can go through most bosses with an easier time without getting extremely good at it. I've played through all 3 dks games and am not exactly good at them (ironically they are by far my favourite games), but in those games you had less opportunity to use adjuncts like summons or spells. You might feel bad about using other means than pure combat skills (I certainly do) but the devs put those things in for a reason.
