> the classroom is no place for such divisive nonsense
I should have thought that the classroom would be an eminently suitable place for discussion of divisive matters of all sorts—better than learning to discuss this sort of thing on Twitter or Facebook. Of course, at least in Britain, our freedom of speech warriors tend to be as censorious as the ‘woke’ lot they deride (see e.g. this online harms business and Prevent). The real problem is that there is no intellectual ambition in the educational policy of mainstream leftists and rightists in the West. Cummings was close, but then brought in that awful eugenicist, which has ruined any chance of getting more mathematicians into government or doing anything to increase the intellectual level of education in this country, I fear. Gove was better than most but spends most of his time fighting crises created by other ministers, and Cummings was largely his fault.
