Thanks for the advice. I'll really take the first point to heart. I do think I've been waiting for my job to give me more challenging problems, but that's too much of a sedentary approach. One commenter mentioned opensource projects, and I think that's great advice. I'll try and pursue that. Thanks for the advice :)
