- bastawhiz 5y ago> Online advertising existed even back then but it was less obnoxious as far as I can remember. This is almost laughable. Popups were so bad that every major browser was forced to add pop-up blocking features. Pages were stuffed full of ads—I can't even begin to tell you how many times I was the millionth visitor or had won some sort of sweepstakes. IE5/6 would "click" when iframes navigated, which meant that you'd be barraged by audible clicking as pages loaded their ads. If you were on dialup, you wasted heaps of time waiting for the ads to load and redirect and slowly render in. There was no such thing as an ad blocker. > Web analytics that tracked users across multiple devices was unheard of. Nobody had multiple devices.
