US 101 in that stretch is actually part of the National Highway System and gets federal funding, though notionally all US highways are state highways with a national grid number.

Now I'm curious where that tabulation was I saw years ago that detailed the differences in the sign shape color and appearance. https://www.google.com/maps/place/CA-237,+Milpitas,+CA/@37.4077315,-121.9795477,3a,75y,90t/data=!3m8!1e2!3m6!1sAF1QipNM8_FygvMhsYcIH-TztjyIqvFcECdhgYkxV4Gv!2e10!3e12!6shttps:%2F%2Flh5.googleusercontent.com%2Fp%2FAF1QipNM8_FygvMhsYcIH-TztjyIqvFcECdhgYkxV4Gv%3Dw144-h86-k-no!7i4032!8i2405!4m5!3m4!1s0x808fc9cd3a48ab63:0x97e24e4d53a3a32f!8m2!3d37.4289917!4d-121.9098515 https://www.google.com/maps/place/CA-237,+Milpitas,+CA/@37.4...
