I can tell you that for me this is actually really annoying.
When my Bluetooth mouse runs out of battery, and I would just charge it for a couple of minutes and it lasts the whole day.
But end of the day, I almost always forget to charge it overnight. So the next day I have to repeat the process.
That's why now when it runs out of battery, I just use it in wired mode. And a while later I unplug it or whenever I realize it's in wired mode.
Yes it's a small thing but if you can implement it why not just do it? Or better yet, switch to AAAs and not worry about charge circuits at all?
- tinus_hn 5y agoI do not understand why you expect this from the company that tells phone users ‘you’re holding it wrong’. You’re using it wrong. It’s not a problem, just use it right. It’s just a small thing. Apple isn’t going to change their products just because you can’t remember to charge them. Their target audience can. They aren’t going to switch to inferior batteries because you can’t use the product right, because most people can use the product right with no problems. And they aren’t going to make people use their wireless mouse while permanently attached to a wire. It’s not a better product if it allows that. So they don’t. And if you don’t like it there’s a market full of wired and wireless mice on batteries or whatever you want. Probably a lot cheaper too.

Right, but if your design encourages users to use it wrong then it's a problem with the design. > Apple isn’t going to change their products just because you can’t remember to charge them. Their target audience can. Right, that's why I don't use Apple products. Because in many cases they don't change their products to better suit their users. > They aren’t going to switch to inferior batteries because you can’t use the product right, because most people can use the product right with no problems. "inferior batteries" how? AAAs charge effectively instantly because you can switch them out instantly. The magic mouse even originally ran on two AAs! A pair of rechargable eneloop pro AAs have 2500 mAH capacity at 1.2 V. So they would have similar capacity as the battery pack in the modern magic mouse. And it's not like I'm the only one who can't remember to charge them. The linked article mentions the author has a very similar problem. > It’s not a better product if it allows that. So they don’t. You still haven't told me why you think this... > And if you don’t like it there’s a market full of wired and wireless mice on batteries or whatever you want. Probably a lot cheaper too. Agreed.
- tinus_hn 5y agoHow does the design of a rechargeable mouse encourage you to forget to charge it. It makes no sense. The original whine fest is about not being able to use the mouse while it’s wired. That’s because Apple wants you to enjoy using it wirelessly. It’s not hard and if you make a mistake, you can charge it to last a day in the time it takes to make coffee. No big deal. If you forget to charge it overnight, there’s a new chance tomorrow. Oh and the Magic Mouse 2 features a 1986 mAh battery at 4.2v which really is quite a bit more energy than your pair of batteries of 2500 mAh at 1.2v. Unsurprisingly of course, otherwise we’d all have cellphones running on aaa batteries. You’re not the target audience, you don’t need to tell Apple you’d want the charging port to be somewhere else, it’s a pretty obvious choice they can think of themselves. Clearly they purposefully made the different choice. And between you and Apple it’s probably also clear who is selling a ton of mice and who is not.

If the charge port was not on the bottom I would not be able to forget to charge it. Therefore by putting the charge port on the bottom they have raised the probability that I forget to charge the mouse. > The original whine fest is about not being able to use the mouse while it’s wired. Unsurprisingly of course, otherwise we’d all have cellphones running on aaa batteries. The iFixit teardown says that it runs at 3.67V? Did they change it recently? Here's where I found it: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Magic+Mouse+2+Battery+Replaceme https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Magic+Mouse+2+Battery+Replaceme... Hmm, does Apple sell a ton of mice though? Certainly not more than Logitech, which is the brand I currently use (and I have quite a few gripes with their mice too). I criticize Apple because I really want to buy their products. Their products offer features that other companies cannot dream of developing. I believe it makes total sense for a consumer to wish for products that better cater to their preferences. I can't force them to listen to me though, and obviously they shouldn't just do everything I tell them to do.
