Python’s user base is growing more each year than many other languages’ total user base. I’d guess more people will start learning python this month, than the total number of fortran, cobol, and lisp programmers ever lived. People who don’t even identify as programmers use python. It’s just a different world from most languages in this respect. (Although R probably has a lot of users in this category doing various data analysis.)
