I did basically exactly this but for reserving a spot at the visa centre for a residence permit appointment. Subverting a small aspect of the Hostile Environment[1] took a little bit of the edge of the general bastardry of the whole process. Still a bloody expensive and emotionally draining experience though: if it has to be done again, I won't be putting a loved one though that again and we'll both be leaving.
