Did Apple just imply that buying a faster processor from them levels the playing field for underrepresented minorities? Did anybody else hear this or am I hallucinating?

- alwillis 5y agoDid Apple just imply that buying a faster processor from them levels the playing field for underrepresented minorities? In the context of a $4000 Mac Studio with something like FinalCut Pro allows them similar creative power that the inaccessible, siloed $10,000 workstations. You're much more likely to see a Mac Studio in a school, library or computer lab where underrepresented people live. I had a gig a few years ago that took place in a public library with a lab of trashcan-style Intel Mac Pros, which were more expensive and far less capable than a Mac Studio.
- gowld 5y agoA school/library should not waste money on a $4000 computer.
- zodiakzz 5y ago... they should waste $8000 on an Intel + Nvidia to teach video processing?
- theshrike79 5y agoOur library has a room with a PS4 with four controllers and a full VR set and 3D-printers and a CAD vinyl cutter and a bunch of sowing machines etc. It's not a waste of money when you bring expensive equipment to tens of thousands of people to use. A single $4k computer for a 1000+ student school should be an afterthought, spread that cost over 5 years and the cost per student is minuscule. This is not a Chromebook you get for every student, you'll need one or two max - unless the school specifically focuses on A/V production.

This is equally true for a $10k computer, spread over all the students. It's great to save money. But Apple's diversity claim just doesn't add up.
- crackercrews 5y agoDoes the new $4,000 computer allow you to do things that cannot be done on an M1 Mac Mini that costs $699? Or does it just make those things faster? I'm not a video expert so honestly don't know.
