I don't know if this is an explanation for Robin Hanson's perspective specifically, but the community he sort-of co-founded (LessWrong) is infamous for waxing lyrical about philosophy, while refusing to read academically-respected pre-existing philosophy. It's rather fun to keep track of which pre-existing philosophy they've reinvented their way up to.
