How I treat my urge to hoard data
- rektide 5y agoi feel like most media-hording is still 10 years behind the times. x265 has been around, and it's savings are frequently >>2x at 1080p and grow from there as you increase resolution. this tech was kind of a trend for a couple years, but honestly, things have gone backwards on most torrent sites & other locations- it's gotten less elite, less compressed, been more mass-pirate-market rather than elite-pirate-market. much to everyone's colossal disadvantage. and there's yet another sea change afoot. av1 could easily offer >2x gain, again, in compression ratios, especially at 1080p or above. it's just amazing. we could stash so much more stuff. we could peer so much more effectively. it's just big players- it's just netflix and google- who bother to get good. the underbelly of diy'ers and p2p'ers remains vested in un-elite technology, in crap lower-common-denominator technology. what a pity, for them. hording is, imo, a valiant & great effort, noble. but most hording is done poorly, with bad technology, that is heavily & sadly dated. the scene needs to up it's damned standards & stop pegging itself as loserly low levels of technology, stop being pathetic.
- hddherman 5y agoSometimes the choice of the encoding is affected by the target audience. Devices like Raspberry Pi can decode H.264 video well enough due to having the hardware to accelerate it. Some new hardware, like the AMD Radeon RX 6500, still don’t support AV1 decode. Changes like this tend to take time, especially due to hardware development having a years-long lead time.
- rektide 5y agoPersonally I'd rather folks shoot high, aim for great, & if someone has special needs, they can transpile out their suboptimal version as they like. Software rendering at 1080p should work just fine for everyone. Even if a pi cant realtime decode a high bit rate av1, it probably can re-encode a movie overnight, maybe in a day. That is a chore, yes, but in return we get to be transfering the best quality available, we're getting much better results. I dont think there's any reason to wait. The good stuff should start getting seeded. We need media servers to help fill in the gap, do overnight non-real-time transcoding.
