Elon Musk asked to ‘turn off’ Teslas in Russia, while making superchargers free
- m348e912 5y agoIt seems like it would be a bad business move by setting such a precedent. I could see him perhaps turning off ota updates but shutting the cars off means that future buyers in countries like China will have to think twice about risks of losing use of their vehicle if their countries relations with the west turns sour.
- thfuran 5y agoShutting cars off ought to mean that telsa gets immediately disincorporated. Companies just should not be able to decide that they no longer want you to use the product that they sold you and remotely destroy it.
- assttoasstmgr 5y ago> turning off ota updates With the new US export restrictions, I would say exporting software to Russia by means of an OTA update would land them in hot water.
- rvz 5y agoSo your Tesla car basically has a fully remote OTA backdoor controlled by Tesla Inc., as predicted. Hardly a surprise. Can't wait for a hacker to control a random Tesla from anywhere in the world by using Starlink internet.
- rnk 5y ago1. You can disconnect your car from the internet if you wish 2. They have been very security minded, tested it multiple ways, and have paid attackers to try, paid for bugs like a real company. The internal car os is separate from the much more fragile 'infotainment' display. Given all that, I still wish mine had an easy way to disconnect the internet, and also to disable os updates.
- moistly 5y agoSearch for “america car remote shut off law” and choose whichever source you find reputable. Summary: US government intends to have a remote kill-switch for all new cars. This isn’t just Tesla having an OTA backdoor: it’s going to be every manufacturer.
