The UK Conservatives are currently enjoying the largest majority of seats in the house of commons they have had since Thatcher.
This puts them in a predicament...
They won this majority primarily because of their tough bullsh^W stance on Brexit, and (not so implicitly) on immigration (spoiler: "stopping it".)
If they were to open our borders to allow UKR refugees in, they probably think they would instantly lose a huge chunk of their support.
- spinningslate 5y agoDon't know why you're being down-voted. Reducing immigration has been a central theme of the UK government's policy. Opening up the borders - or being seen to do so - runs the risk of negative reaction from those strongly in favour of tightening them. -- EDIT: fixed grammar
- KaiserPro 5y agoThis is pretty much the correct assessment of the situation. However in this instance the public have great empathy with Ukrainians fleeing to safety. The issue here is that the present government is never actually any good at predicting problems before they get bad, and are always reacting far to late.
- gadders 5y agoThey have already failed to stop immigration: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/12/31/three-times-many-migrants-crossed-channel-2021-previous-year/ https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/12/31/three-times-many... "Record-breaking 28,381 people made perilous journey across the world’s busiest shipping lane this year"
- Jenk 5y agoI made no assertion on the success of their campaign pledges :)
