Russian police easily unlock password-protected iPhone and Telegram
- 12ian34 5y agoThe tweet and majority of its replies are in Russian. Viewing on web, only the tweet is instantly translatable to English. There is no other source or evidence for the claim immediately available in English. I am not refuting the claim but it seems a little odd that police would be able to instantly unlock a password protected iPhone in person without some kind of other clue or social engineering. If this is true, surely this is a much bigger problem around iPhone security? Seems a little odd.
- macleginn 5y agoThe tweet was posted by my old friend, and I absolutely trust her judgement in this case. Arguably, this is not the best proof, but it may take some time until more such cases come to surface.
- strogonoff 5y agoTelegram is insecure by default—it is not E2EE but for all practical purposes a plain-text database. In addition, Roskomnadzor and Telegram have agreed to cooperate on investigating suspected extremists a few years back, which does not bode well for its E2EE mode either (but non-technical people tend to never use secret chats anyway). Since this is all public information, by recommending Telegram any technically savvy person is making huge, possibly freedom-costing disservice to their friends in Russia or Ukraine.
