There's a saying in the US military: "Embrace the suck". Sometimes, life sucks. Deal with it. Perhaps not the best for long-term mental health, but definitely a viable mental survival strategy. I'm not prepared either, but I had a much less sheltered childhood, so I hope the shock would be lessened for me.
