The goal is to make someone in Russia assassinate Putin, it has become obvious by now that this is the propaganda goal of "the west". Some even open compare it to the assassination attempt(s) against Hitler. I have no clue how protected Putin actually is and whether his assassination would put someone in power who could/would end the war.
