Parture – transcribe all music ever recorded
- dwrodri 5y agoThis seems like a super interesting effort. I for one, am a huge fan of having a centralized resource where I could access and query sheet music and download MIDI files associated with pieces. - Is there going to be any interest in music that doesn't map well to sheet music? Ostensibly, no. There are a lot of electronic sounds from synthesizers which are very difficult to translate to sheet music. - Is the intent to make an Internet Archive for music? How will your funding model work? - Is there a "standard" way of representing sheet music that works for both computers and people? Does it cover 80%-90% of pieces right now that are in the public domain? Really fascinating project. I might know some people who have been working on projects that could help with this.
- Optimal_Persona 5y agoWhile "transcribing music is hard for humans", it is by far one of the best ear-training exercises a musician can possibly do. I don't transcribe music regularly, but on the occasions I did (prompted by not finding existing transcriptions of more obscure songs by well-known jazz artists) it greatly increased my understanding of the composer/musicians' approach, and my own musicality. Worthwhile project, but sometimes the journey is as valuable as the destination.
