I did a bit of research of this whole matter awhile back:-
.) One of the parents (male) had HIV. They wanted a kid (without HIV) so they consented to this 'thing'. The impregnation was done by IVF. All babies were in health after being born.
.) At present, you can remove HIV from sperm cells by washing them. This altered sperm is then impregnated by IVF, and the offspring does not have any HIV virus in them. Lots of couples, who are suffering from HIV, have offspring via this method and is completely safe procedure. So, there was no need for the parents to do this whole 'thing' in the first place.
.) This doctor is the first one to this in the entire world. These babies are the first in the world to be born via this method. The doctor basically became 'God'.
.) He disclosed what he has done on a seminar in China. It was a surprise for the audience and all other guests. There is a 1-2 hour video on YouTube available of the full seminar. After his presentation was done, he got somewhat blasted by the audience to do such radical thing. There was a good chance that the procedure would have messed up and the babies born would be different from normal (I like to think a different breed/race than homo-sapiens). The whole thing is too radical, so no scientist or doctor touched this whole matter because there is too much of a risk for the babies. And the current methods to do correct gene editing are not perfect.
.) Afaik (I am not doctor), the procedure was the doctor takes scissors and cuts the gene/dna of the babies in the womb(embryo). But the procedure is not perfect in its present state. There is above 95% (IIRC) of him cutting the wrong parts of DNA. But luckily, he was able to cut the right parts of the sequence and the babies were born normally.
.) He was also a professor/student in an american university. He got help from his previous professors or colleague from the university to perfect his method. They are cited in his work. They knew what he was doing and actively helped in him.
.) IMO, the babies will grow up and may reproduce. No one knows what will become of the next generation born from the current babies, bcuz this is the first time it has happened. Will they be humans (Homo sapiens) like us? It should never have been done right now. The whole thing is experimental in its current stage. It will take more than 50 years to perfect the methods and have a proper gene edited babies. It will practically solve all hereditary medical problems we humans face. Later on some actors will weaponize the technology and create super-soldirers (like captain america), super scientist and whatnot.
.) As I said above, I am not a doctor/scientist. So, some things written above may be incorrect. I had done the bit of research 2-3 years back and have forgotten the technical details. Still, it is an quite an interesting thing to look into.
