You might "suffer" from Aphantasia[1]. I learned about this a few years ago. Before I thought it to be totally normal to not "see" any images in my head. Turns out it really isn't that normal. There is definitely a grey area here but for me it's pretty black. I cannot imagine any picture in that sense. I also play chess and it always was a mystery to me how people can play blindfolded.
I always got lost somewhere in the middle game.. probably just because I could not visualize the board in my head. I am still pretty good at calculating tactics in chess and Go.. so it's hard to say what is actually important for what aspect of the game.. the brain is a complex beast!
