I spent the day watching Russia Today – now I’m questioning my grip on reality
- dash2 5y agoI loved this metaphor: “mice squeaking against the avalanche”. I want to use that every time some loon thinks he’s discovered The Truth that the Mainstream Media Won’t Tell You
- glandium 5y agoWTF? https://mobile.twitter.com/williamshatner/status/1411482567048527872 https://mobile.twitter.com/williamshatner/status/14114825670... I have a contractual obligation to promote my new show “I Don’t Understand” which is on RT America. You don’t like that network? Fine. Don’t watch. Attack me about that and you l’ll be blocked. Am I clear? Good.
- russellbeattie 5y agoAww! Looks like RT America shut down. Dammit! It sounded like a hoot. I was hoping to find the stream just for a laugh. https://www.cnn.com/2022/03/03/media/rt-america-layoffs/index.html https://www.cnn.com/2022/03/03/media/rt-america-layoffs/inde...
- beebeepka 5y agoWell, better late than never. When you think about it, the notion of free press/media is just silly and childishly naive. Not saying things are the same everywhere around the world. Absolutely not. However, there's no way big media, including the abomination called social media, are in any way independent. RT is propaganda, CNN is propaganda, Al Jazeera, DW, BBC, etc. All are primarily mouthpieces and only speak truths when it suits whoever pays the bills. If there ever was a time when Google, FB, Twitter and the rest of America's behemoths were not completely in line with whoever sets the tone in the US, it must have been a really long time ago. It's not a very comfortable view of the world but it's easy to see once you take several steps back and ignore "the news" for a few years
- simonblack 5y agoAnd, most eerily, a world where you can talk about Russian foreign policy… and barely ever mention Putin. That's because it's the West that demonises leaders and not the country for some reason, so in the West we hear "Putin did this, Putin did that ...." But when we talk about "our people" it's "The US did this, Britain did that, Japan does the other ..." Russia Today (aka RT), the [...] outlet funded by the Russian government Why is the fact that RT is funded by the Russian Government so roundly emphasised as if that were something unusual? We don't read every time we see the BBC or the ABC written about in print the same stuff along the lines of "The BBC, the outlet funded by the British Government, stated today ..." or perhaps "The ABC, the outlet funded by the Australian Government, stated today ..."
