On Watching Ukraine Through Palestinian Eyes
- boxed 5y ago> The rightful outpouring of support for Ukraine teaches us that the West can condemn occupation when it wants to. Hamas is a terrorist anti-semitic hate group. Ukraine isn't run by people who demand the total destruction of Russia and want a genocide on the Russian people. The contrast is sharp unless you're either blind or pretending to be.
- unmole 5y agoThe fact that the neo-Nazi Azov Batallion is fighting for Ukraine does not justify what Russia is doing. Why is the same principle so hard to apply in the case of Palestine?
- boxed 5y agoWhat you're talking about is one part of the military that largely deny the nazism connection. They are also still fighting for their country even though their president is Jewish. Can't be that nazi if they do that can they? In Palestine it's the government itself, not one regiment of the army. In Palestine they don't deny their hatred, they shout it from the roof tops. Palestine also doesn't have a Jewish president. There's an enormous difference.
- unmole 5y ago> They are also still fighting for their country even though their president is Jewish. Can't be that nazi if they do that can they? They are fighting for their idea of their country, not for the Jewish president. I don't see how that makes them not neo-Nazi. The US Congress considered them enough of a problem to forbid any aid to them. Platforms like Facebook still ban Azov except for restricted instances where they are praised as defenders of Ukraine. On a slight tangent, the Association of German National Jews vocally supported Hitler right up until 1933. > In Palestine it's the government itself. Hamas is not the recognised government of Palestine. It has been in control of the Gaza Strip only since 2007 while the dispossession of Palestinians is decades older. Not to mention the only reason Hamas found support is because the moderate Fatah was seen as ineffective in protecting Palestinians. I don't think it has anything to do with an affinity for blond haired White people as TFA seems to suggest. Ashkenazi Jews only make up around 40% of Israel's Jewish population. And you can't really tell Palestinians from Israelis based on skin tone. TFA doesn't address what I think is the actual reason why Palestinians are ignored. Jewish Americans and Evangelical Christians support the the State of Israel for religious and cultural reasons. Their influence shapes the public discourse. So, any acknowledgement of the Palestinian side is considered anti-Israel and anything anti-Israel is labelled anti-Semitic. And of course there is the geopolitical aspect. As Netanyahu himself said, the State of Israel is like a "mighty aircraft carrier" of the US.
