We're still living in the tail-end of the second world war, which was a continuation of the first world war. Let's hope this does not end up being known as "the second interbellum" [1] and that Europe learns to stand on its own feet when it comes to defence so it can withstand whatever comes at it from the (far) east as well as from the west. Let's also hope that this does not end up as yet another attempt at creating what would now be the "Fourth Reich". The same factors which made Europe the cradle of modern civilisation also make it into a belligerent place filled with both bright people as well as big ideas. This is a volatile combination.
