But if you look at any other city on yandex.ru the map is next to useless because street and city names are machine transcribed to Russian without showing the real name. How useful is that when you are trying to find your way reading street signs?
I don't have to understand a name on a map, I just need the letters to match with reality.

- KronisLV 5y agoIn my eyes, that's pretty close to what a Russian speaking person might sometimes be comfortable with. Obviously, if you don't speak the language or don't want said translations, you can also use the english version of the maps, for example: https://yandex.com/maps/90/san-francisco/?ll=-122.431516%2C37.768760&z=14 https://yandex.com/maps/90/san-francisco/?ll=-122.431516%2C3... In the non-Russian variety of the maps there is also a little dropdown in the lower right which seems to let you switch between the variations - it not being there in the Russian maps feels like a UX shortcoming though. Also, i think that they could have borrowed the double naming for streets as well, instead of just cities, but i guess they didn't manage to find a good way to display data like that. Zoomed out example of both names visible: https://yandex.ru/maps/90/san-francisco/?ll=-122.391120%2C37.761305&z=12 https://yandex.ru/maps/90/san-francisco/?ll=-122.391120%2C37...
