Before you down-vote me in pure rage, please read till the end.
I appreciate the gesture but this does literally nothing. Even though in current situation standing up to the regime may bring serious consequences signing petitions has the same impact as sending thoughts and prayers. This is Putin, he doesn't care.
The majority of Russian population didn't and won't hear about the genocide that he unleashed on Ukraine. Out of those who have, a large portion flat-out denies it as western propaganda. What has to happen is physical presence on the streets. Yes, that will result in mass arrests, then violence, then Russian people dying.
In the end, when the change achieves critical mass, the army will join and end Putin's reign.
I've seen the events of Romanians freeing themselves from under Nicolae Ceaușescu's boot in person. It's horrific, it's tragic, it's heart breaking.
Freedom costs dearly and is paid for in blood and human sacrifice.
That has always been the story of peoples' fight for independence.
It will happen sooner or later because the next, much stronger incentive for the Russian people to enforce change, will be hunger. This however will happen long after Ukraine is wiped out.
Slava Ukrajini.
- thriftwy 5y agoThe second most popular opinion on the social networks, after "no to the war" (which I agree have been uncontestes number 1) is "the war started 8 years ago, where've you been"
- Andrew_nenakhov 5y ago... protesting it all these years.
- thriftwy 5y agoPeople have been protesting against various things in Russia for 11 years now and they're in full understanding that "it does not work that way". But for the people who thought the tradegy has started unexpectedly on Feb 24th, there's a perspective that the tragedy is ongoing. It was merely renewed for a new season.
- throwaway290 5y agoI have relatives and friends and they say so far civilians are not harmed in a directed way. I am worried about them. Is it true that there is a genocide?
- grey-area 5y agoYes, civilian housing is being deliberately hit with shells, thermobaric bombs and cluster bombs. There are no military targets nearby. This is a campaign of terror similar to Aleppo and Grozny and the end state of cities will be the same.
- throwaway290 5y agoAre you basing this off watching news? Some media cried mass murder from day 1, while I had been in touch with people living in the East and first-hand information begged to differ. Now they finally decided to leave their city where active skirmishes were ongoing, so I don't have first-hand info anymore. Reportedly calm so far where they are (I hope they will leave the country, but men are not allowed to leave and his wife does not want to go without).
- grey-area 5y agoI’m basing that on multiple videos from Ukrainian civilians on twitter showing tower blocks, shopping centres and parks being shelled or bombed and civilians dead, the one that struck me was repeated shelling of the side of a tower block by tanks or artillery - that was targeted and aimed at killing civilians. Very hard to fake and no real incentive to do so. Definitely only in certain cities right now but as the war spreads the atrocities will get worse in contested areas. But it’s a very hard decision to leave everything behind and travel is dangerous too. I hope they will be ok and I’m sorry your friends are in such a horrible position.
