We need to increase oil and gas output immediately
- TrispusAttucks 5y agoAbsolutely! Keystone XL should be rubber stamped like 2 weeks ago and our government should be warp speeding it's development.
- icedistilled 5y agoThat would get oil in like 5 years. Same with new leases it would get new oil far in the future and locked in far in the future. That is not what we need. What we need is a green energy surge. That is the only way to end fossil fuel fueling wars and dictators.
- TrispusAttucks 5y agoAh yes. We'll just switch over the entire world economy to "green energy" in 5 years instead. So simple!
- patrick451 5y agoRight. Instead, we'll just have wars over lithium deposits, or just raw land upon which the victor installs solar cells and wind turbines. Fossil fuels were probably the panacea that ended wars for whale territory on the high seas 150 years ago.
- vba616 5y agoWhy? What is the connection with sanctions on Russia? I don't understand how a pipeline can create more oil or why that's needed. All else being equal, shipping stuff further costs more, so in a state of pristine ignorance, I would expect oil imported into the US mostly comes from Canada and Mexico, not Russia (or Saudi Arabia). If only there were a global information network that was easily searchable for factual information... Also, I would assume that the oil Russia can't sell because of sanctions will go somewhere, maybe...China? Or just used domestically. I don't get why there would be a net effect on global supply in the medium to long term. Also it's just weird that the electric car guy is demanding cheap oil and gas.
- TrispusAttucks 5y agoWow. You're a parody of yourself.
- vba616 5y agoI don't know what you think I am. I'm not a free market or libertarian extremist. I'm not a Tesla fan, or an electric car owner, but I do generally accept the existence of AGW. I tend to think people are insincere about stopping it. I have no clue what Musk is thinking, ever. I think there are some disingenuous opinions being amplified right now that are maybe due to energy company interests that nobody should be taking at face value. Also, I mean, nobody should take Musk too seriously at any time. Gasoline prices were way up when I filled up today, and the current US administration is saying they have to limit sanctions on Russia so that...gas prices won't go up. It seems like the ship has sailed and yet CNN reports this uncritically as if it made sense. Other sources that seem more knowledgeable, say there is disruption because people are afraid of uncertainty, so whether there's actual sanctions is moot. I don't know if you read my previous comment as denying that fuel is more expensive right now. It is! I was just saying it should be temporary because Russia must be able to sell most of their output to someone. Public statements by India and China haven't left the impression that they're too good to take it. My main obsession is getting people to explain things that don't make sense to me, that seem incoherent, and they always get angry and refuse to explain. Sometimes, not infrequently, they try to tell me what I think. But I don't think much when I don't understand something. It's a waste of effort.
- TrispusAttucks 5y ago> It's a waste of effort. Agreed. Nothing personal but if I need to explain in detail all the benefits of increased oil production on North American soil I have already lost. I don't have the energy to discuss USA consumption of 700,000+ barrels per day of Russian oil. I don't want to dig up references to OPEC denying Bidens requests to increase production. I don't want to defend the disgust of our president banning a US pipeline while simultaneously approving a Russian one. The thought of searching for old articles about how Russia used environmental activist groups to sabotage and delay the pipeline until it's eventual cancellation would be exhausting. Mostly I'm sad of Fifth-generation warfare and the collateral damage it causes to everyone on the battle field who don't even realize they're on a battlefield. Keystone XL was good for America. Full stop. If we can't agree on that there is no point of further discourse.
- iamthemonster 5y agoHe will say anything for attention won't he? Countries that have not been rapidly decarbonising (my own included) need to accept that they fucked up, and their short term lever is to cut their wasteful consumption of energy to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels. I'm not sure what Musk is on about here though with respect to the USA, I don't think they are reliant on Russian fossil fuel exports to a meaningful extent, it's just that the fossil fuels have a market price that is reflecting their insecurity. Reliance on fossil fuels for bulk energy is now a high risk gamble. If we increase CO2 emissions now, then we are likely to cause ecological damage which will take longer to recover from than nuclear war.
